“You will move into the domit I arranged for you,” I told my mother. We stood in the cozy living area I’d furnished for my future mate, something that seemed farther from my reach than ever. “Alexa will move in here with her younglings.”

“Is that how you greet your mother?” She strode over to me and turned her face to the side, inviting my kiss.

My lips thinned. “I don’t understand why you did this.”

She huffed. “I will not leave this domit.” Her arms linked on her chest and her tail whipped back and forth behind her, smacking against the coffee table. “You cannot make me.”

“I do not need to make you.” When would she learn a relationship with Alexa was what I wanted—needed? “If you chose to remain here, I will move Alexa into my domit.” Never mind that Alexa had already refused.

Mother’s composure cracked, and she shifted away from me, putting the sofa between us. “You wouldn’t!”

“Why not? She is my mate. She belongs in my bed furs.”

“I have someone else in mind for you. She will warm your furs.”

“Mother,” I said as gently as I could. Despite her behavior, I loved her. I only wished for her to see Alexa as I did. “I do not wish to meet anyone else.” I tugged my weapons’ strap aside to reveal the symbol. “This shows that Alexa is my maelstrom mate.”

Her breath caught. “It’s not possible. She is not of our species.”

“Yet she is one of many who has formed a maelstrom bond with a Ferlaern warrior.”

My mother walked closer, her steps slow due to an old injury to her hip. She’d fallen while training a trundier and walked with a limp since. “Son.” Her hand glided down my face. “You know I only want what is best for you.”

“That is Alexa.”

“She is human. What if she decides to move away or return to Earth? I do not wish to see you hurt.”

“She touches something inside me no one else has.” I gently took her hand and held it to my chest. “Feel my second heart beating? It does this for her and no one else.”

“You cannot love her already.”

I shrugged. “Love can come quickly, or it can take a lifetime. I only know that I want to be with her all the time. She makes me happy and when we…”

Her lips twitched upward. “Do not share that with your mother.”

I pulled her close, hugging her. The top of her head came to my chin, and I rested mine on hers. “Will you try, for me?”

“I do not know if I can, Bruge,” she said softly. “Her ways are not ours. She is not one of us.”

“We all must try to meet with them in the middle. Many of us died from the disease but the Earthlings give us hope for a vibrant future.”

“I don’t like it.”

“You do not need to like it, but it would help if you accepted it — if you made an attempt to know Alexa, to see her as I do.
